  1. Keep front yards simple, backyards exciting.
  2. Plant for all four seasons.
  3. Concept landscaping. (Shade, Cottage, Butterfly, etc)
  4. Plan for the least amount of maintenance.
  5. Never plant grass next to the house.
  6. Always plan for each plant’s mature size.
  7. Plant in odd numbers.
  8. Mass planting is better than singles.
  9. Place larger plants in the back and smaller plants in the front.
  10. Use plants to soften hardscape items such as a/c, electrical boxes, sheds, ect.

  2. Soil
  1. Type of Soil (Heavy Clay / Sand / Black Dirt)
  2. Ph (Acid / Alkaline)
  3. Fertilizer (Needs Soil Amendments)
  4. Drainage (Holds Water / Run Off)
IV.  PLANT SELECTION

  1. Formal / Natural
  2. High / Low Maintenance
  3. Color Palette
  1. Favorite Colors
  2. Contrasting Foliage
  3. Bloom Time
  4. Purpose / Seasons

V.  PREPARE AREA

  1. Clean / Roto-Till Planting Area
  2. Add Soil Amendments / Fertilizers
  3. Preen Area (Pre-emergent Herbicide)

Rules of thumb:

  • Odd numbers work better; the exception is a formal design
  • Plant in masses; makes a statement, more dramatic
  • Continuity; repeat patterns and plants throughout
  • Stair-step; high in the back, short in the front
  • Plan for year round interest
